The Stephen Sondheim musical opened at the Shubert Theatre February 25, 1973.

The original Broadway production of A Little Night Music opened at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre February 25, 1973. The production, directed and produced by Harold Prince, played 12 previews and 601 previews before closing August 3, 1974. The musical earned 12 Tony Award nominations, winning six including Best Musical.

Based on the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music follows aging actress Desiree Armfeldt, her mother Madame Armfeldt, and a series of interwoven love affairs during one eventful weekend in the country. The musical features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler.

The original production starred Len Cariou as Fredrick Egerman, Hermione Gingold as Madame Armfeldt, Glynis Johns as Desiree Armfeldt, George Lee Andrews as Frid, D’Jamin Bartlett as Petra, Despo as Malla, Patricia Elliott as Countess Charlotte Malcolm, Beth Fowler as Mrs. Segstrom, Laurencee Guittard as Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, Judy Kahan as Fredrika Armfeldt, Mark Lambert as Henrik Egerman, Barbara Lang as Mrs. Anderssen, Victoria Mallory as Anne Egerman, Teri Ralston as Mrs. Nordstrom, Benjamin Rayson as Mr. Lindquist, Gene Varrone as Mr. Erlanson, Will Sharpe Marshall as Bertrand, Sherry Mathis as Osa. Rounding out the company were Despo and Len Gochman.
