Playwrights Horizons Transforms Its Facade Into a Public Art Space

Artist, activist, and writer Avram Finkelstein and two-time Tony-winning set and costume designer David Zinn, in collaboration with Playwrights Horizons, have launched a new public art series to be housed in the theatre’s 42nd Street building facade. Artists Jilly Ballistic, Ken Gonzales-Day, Dread Scott, and more to be announced will create installations for the space as part of Playwrights Horizons’ new Lighthouse Project series, an exploration of the definition of playwriting and how a theatre building can be used. “This year, this theatre is celebrating its 50th anniversary under remarkably strange circumstances: a global pandemic, a historical reckoning, and a constitutional crisis… Fortunately, Avram and David brought their idea to Playwrights Horizons: to use the frontage of our theatre, depressingly silent during these times, as a platform to engage with the city through public art,” says Artistic Director Adam Greenfield. For more information on Lighthouse programming, visit PlaywrightsHorizons.org. Work from street and subway artist Jilly Ballistic premieres January 19.

Plus: Check out new trailers for two upcoming small screen projects with theatre ties: the second season of TNT’s Snowpiercer (featuring Tony winner Daveed Diggs and Lena Hall) and Hulu’s The United States vs. Billie Holiday (penned by Suzan Lori-Parks and featuring Andra Day as the title blues legend). The titles premiere January 25 and February 26, respectively.
